During the mandatory confinement, imposed by the Portuguese government at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, Juliette started to observe the small worlds present in the backyard of a typical country house from Alentejo. She was particularly interested in the events surrounding the Gazania flower, which she will call the ‘Fire Flower’, a female metaphor. Through continuous observation, carried out systematically during the night, Juliette found that the petals of Gazania close at dusk and open with the sunrise. Even more mysterious was to see that when the flower opened, a snail that sheltered in it every night slowly came out.
'Fire Flower' is an experimental video with texts by the artist produced through the observation of different elements of the environment. ’Fire Flower’ is part of a body of work in which nature and landscapes as research points are revealed as learning resources. Nature, being one and interconnected, is one of the main sources of this work that shows how the environment echoes in our bodies and minds.
